Silverstone Race Report

May 6th, 2014 by alisonpepler.

Silverstone Sunday 6th April 2014 – Round 1 of the 4twocup with Smarts4you Racing.

Firstly I would like to welcome 2 new drivers to this season, the first being Mark Bloomfield a.k.a “Fudge”, Fudge has followed the racing for many years and always came along and supported us, this year he decided to have a go himself, he also intends to put another 450 and a roadster out on the track later this year. Secondly Alan Palmer who first spotted us at Autosport 2014 in the Live Arena, Alan used to do karting a few years back but took some time out with his wife Jane to have 2 lovely children, Emma and Ben who also came along to support “Dad” Alan almost went back into Karting but decided to give our little pocket rockets a go this year instead. Good luck to both of them and we hope they have a fantastic seasons racing.

The day got off to a great start with all the drivers raring to go and a healthy number of supporters turned up to cheer us on.

The seven  4twocup drivers on the grid were made up of series owners James Palmer in the  number 6 Spacewise car and Paul bates in the normally number 3 (changed to 44) JC Motorhomes liveried car. Returning from last year Ashley Craig in the  number 12 G&M motorcompany car, Martyn Clatworthy in the normally number 11 (changed to 111) Ski St Martin car, Jake Jackson in the number 9 Smarts4you Racing/Pure D-zign car and new drivers Mark (not Martin) in the number 69 Fudge Smats car and Alan Palmer in the number 10 newly sponsored Trader Containers car. We were hoping to have 10 drivers but due to technical and medical problems, 3 couldn’t make it David nash, Ian Weir and Sasho Blazhevski in the much anticipated Smart Roadster, here’s hoping they manage to make it out for the next race in a couple of weeks.

Due to the wind we couldn’t set up the awnings as usual but we still managed to line all the cars up and make the Smart Village a sociable and friendly place where all the drivers and supporters could mingle together, creating a great atmosphere.

Qualifying started at 10.10 on a wet track  along with the Arrowpak saloons, Sports car championship, Ford Racing Series and us the4two cup. The 4two cup drivers were pleasantly surprised to find themselves on track with one of the UK’s sporting greats, Sir Chris Hoy in his Nissan. The session was tricky with cars from all classes and championships spinning on the damp track. The drivers soon settled down and got some quick laps in.

Qualifying Positions and Grid Positions for Race 1 were as follows

1. Paul Bates
2. Jake Jackson
3. Ashley Craig
4. Martyn Clatworthy
5. Alan Palmer
6. James Palmer
7. Mark Bloomfield
Fastest lap time was by Paul Bates with a 1:26.354

Race 1 started with the track conditions not as wet but still a bit damp, Pul Bates got a great start and pulled out a small lead closely chased by Ashley Craig and Jake Jackson. Ashley had a small glitch with the car and dropped back slightly allowing Jake Jackson to chase down Paul Bates. The pair had a great battle  but Paul Bates managed to keep the lead until the final corner on the final lap where Jake made a great move and managed to hold off and take the chequered flag.

Race 1 Results and Grid Positions for Race 2 were as follows

  3. Ashley Craig
  4. Martin Clatworthy

  7. Alan Palmer
Fastest lap time was by Ashley Craig with a 1:19.313

Race 2 started with a much drier track and all the cars got off to a great start, with Jake Jackson taking an early lead, followed By Ashley Craig and Paul Bates. Coming down bridge straight one of the Arrow pack cars lost it’s large spoiler which managed to end up going under Paul Bates’ car causing a small hole in the radiator causing Paul Bates to retire. Martin Clatworthy soon got to work and managed to reel in James Palmer and with a nice overtaking manure managed to pass James going in to Copse. Unfortunately Ashley Craig was to far down the road and Martin had to settle for Third place. Jake Jackson lead from the lights and kept Ashley behind him to take his second win of the day.
