Race 3 report from Mettet
A second sunny day at Mettet greeted us all and a packed grid as we qualified with the 2cv’s so an interesting qualifying with lots of cars to pass although some of 2cv,s showed good pace and limpet link handling
First place went to yesterday’s double winner Silvano Caira in the Belgium spec 451 with a credible 1.23.8 with Ashley Craig a close second in the number 12 G&M UK entry 1.24.8 next was another UK entry number 3 James Palmer in the J C Motorhomes sponsored car with a 1.25.8 4th with a 1.28.1 another UK entry Rob Baker in the S2 451 experimenting with a mixture UK and Belgium specs, 5th Another UK entry the Ski st. Martin car of Martin Clatworthy with 1.28.4 then the Belgium car of Damien Verleysn / J P Beguin and finally the 450 of Fredrick Scory with a 1.31.1
The race started with the Smarts being held for about 40 seconds on the grid behind the 2Cv,s.
The 1 hour race included a mandantry stop for either driver change if sharing a car or if not the driver had to exit the car shut the door and then re strap in and off again.
Ashley Craig chose to pit on lap 1 to get himself into space and also get the stop done before the tyres got to temperature.
Next in was Palmer with an unscheduled stop due to an open rear hatchback but he was unable to include his compulsory stop and so lost valuable time but battled on despite some further car issues to still 5th and second overall for the weekend.
The rest of the stops were all completed mid to late race without incident.
After 60 hot and hard fought laps the chequered flag was out for the Smarts.
Finishing second just 29 seconds behind the first place Silvano Caira was Number 12 , Ashley Craig in the G&M sponsored car, third was the S2 car of Rob Baker 1 minute 28 behind the leader , 4th went to Damien and J P in the silver 444 car with Palmer a close 5th, Fredrick Scory taking 450 honours in 6th and Martin ClAtworthy still picking up points but retiring with suspected over heating issues at 45 minutes .
So Overall Silvano took top slot for the weekend with James Palmer second and Ashley Craig 3rd 4th Damien and JP in the 444 Belgium entry , 5th Rob Baker, 6th Martin Baker and 7th Fredrick Scory but winner of the 450 class.
The Smann entry of Theo Van De Berg was the only non finisher for the weekend after problems still from Saturday.
A great weekends racing and we look forward to the next race in Holland,
Great results for the visiting UK drivers
